Dr Claire Chakman completed a Bachelor of Behavioural Neuroscience (BBNSc) at Monash University, a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at Deakin University and holds a Master of Psychiatry (MPM) from the University of Melbourne. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatry (RANZCP) and has completed a Certificate of Advanced Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Dr Chakman's psychiatric career spans more than a decade and has included roles at a number of public health services including Monash Health, Eastern Health and Headspace. She has worked across a variety of settings including outpatient child and adolescents, adolescent inpatient, adult inpatient, perinatal and infant mental health, inpatient eating disorders and addiction medicine.
Over the years, Dr. Chakman has treated patients and families from a wide range of backgrounds and has significant experience with working with gender diverse and neurodiverse individuals.
Dr Chakman has specialised training in Family Based Therapy (FBT) for the treatment of eating disorders, the use of the ADI-R for assessment of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and has completed additional training in ADHD through Monash University. She will have completed EMDR and training by the end of July 2026.
Dr. Chakman's has an interest in treating depression, anxiety, eating disorders, OCD and trauma. Her work is psychodynamically informed with a focus on attachment and early life experiences and combines this with elements of CBT, play therapy, child-focused parent work and family therapy as well as medication management where indicated.
